One opinion on “The Neoliberal Role In Destroying Democracy”

For about 30 years, from the mid 40’s to the mid 70’s gross inequality did not exist in the US and democracy thrived, as it had never before or since. However, it was not secure and typical forces were trying to come up with the right plan to change all of that. With the Powell Memorandum, coordinated efforts by the wealthy and corporations to enact laws serving their agendas (ALEC) and powerful and religiously implement neoliberal (N/L) view of society through the lense of the market, inequality once again began to blossom. For the holders of power, bullseye is carefully placed on democracy itself.

But what exactly is neoliberalism? Having a decent comprehensive view of neoliberalism is essential to even a basic understanding of the American and worldwide political climate today, in 2018. Looking for quality explanations is an ongoing effort for me, but I think the video below, of and interview with George Monbiot, does and outstanding job. I must confess my bias here, as I almost totally agree with Monbiot and believe he verbalized a very complicated principle beautifully (which may prejudice the opinions of some before going further).

George Monbiot is a British writer known for his environmental, political activism, who writes for the Guardian and has published several books. The video below is “an interview covering neoliberalism, migration, Brexit, Trump, community-building, climate change, democracy, power, globalization, and lots more.” I always find that extracting the key points from a speech or interview can be challenging. I prefer just listening first and then maybe listening again to extract what is most important. I have tried to do that for you in summary / outline form in the pdf below. I hope it is helpful for some, otherwise just click the link below and watch and listen to Monbiot.
